It’s a legitimate question—and an important one. In my opinion, nothing about healthcare in the U.S. will change until patients are truly engaged. Theoretically, at least, the combination of ICD-10 and Meaningful Use should help patients get involved and take greater ownership of their healthcare decisions. Here’s why:
First, Meaningful Use provides structure for the electronic capture of patient information, which means patients can more easily get a comprehensive view of their conditions and treatment options. Then, ICD-10 promises to further clarify the clinical information that’s being captured. It will help bring a patient’s health into sharper focus.
