You probably think of Meaningful Use (MU) as a regulatory catalyst driving the adoption of electronic health records (EHRs). You’re not wrong; that’s exactly what it’s designed to do—especially in Stage 1. It offers financial incentives intended to help healthcare organizations—particularly smaller practices—implement an EHR.
What’s less clear to many people, however, is the impact Meaningful Use Stage 2 will likely have on the very fabric of healthcare delivery. With MU Stage 2, we see the beginnings of a subtle but powerful shift in focus. Rather than requiring the implementation of technology, MU2 starts to demand better use of technology. It asks us all to ensure that patient data is not just captured, but used, shared and analyzed to improve care.
Which stage of MU is your practice working to achieve? Have you started to experience the benefits of capturing and using data to improve care?
