All Roads Lead to “Yes”: How Technology & Processes Can Propel Time-of-Service Payments

Amazon-MemeAll adults, especially parents, have learned the power of the pre-emptive question:

Wouldn’t you like to eat your broccoli so you can have dessert? Do you want to do your homework now so you can go to the mall later?

Much like these parents asking these questions every day, physician practices have their own set of questions, and have traditionally asked patients, “Do you want to pay now?” when the right question is, “How would you like to pay today?”

A recent National Public Radio article, “With Medical Debt Rising, Some Doctors Push Patients to Pay Upfront,” points out that many patients have deductibles as high as $5,000. As they adjust to shouldering a larger percentage of their care costs, will patients say “yes” to paying at time of service if they have the option not to?

Practice leadership at Urology of Greater Atlanta acknowledged this challenge. Although they offered consumer-friendly options such as payment plans, they wanted to raise the bar even higher. With Navicure® Payments™ they’ve automated the entire patient payment process – from time-of-service collection through the set-up and receipt of recurring payments. Now, staff has a streamlined workflow that helps ensure patients pay their balances in full:

  • Enroll patient in Navicure® Greenlight™, which securely stores credit or debit card information and charges it after patient financial responsibility is determined
  • Take co-payment, payment in full or partial payment
  • Help patient select a three, six or 12-month payment plan; counsel patient that Navicure Greenlight will automatically deduct payments at the date he/she selects at time of service

“Now, the payment plan runs on auto-pilot until the balance is paid, which greatly reduces the amount of time our staff spends on collections,” says Cheris Craig, chief administrative officer. She also plans to make enrollment in Navicure Greenlight mandatory unless the patient pays an administrative fee to cover the cost of generating and mailing paper statements.
